It was a lovely fall afternoon… likely one of the last we will have this year that is comfortably cool and perfectly engaging for #fallingleaves and family time.
Last week I met up with some special people I know from Elkhart, IN… the Johnson Family. Andy and I used to work together, and I think he and his wife Jenn have been two of my grandest cheerleaders on this journey of mine into professional photography. Perhaps it is because he is an entrepreneur at heart too, and understands what motivates us crazy folks to follow our dreams. Check out his Etsy shop @ElkhartLamps and see what this creative guy has put together! It’s an incredibly successful shop, because he’s the kind of guy that takes care of people, and isn’t afraid to dream a dream and see where it might lead.
And the journey continues, now with his fun family, on a path which actually led us to Oxbow Park in Elkhart last week…
This was our first session together with a little livewire toddling around, (the first time I photographed Ryleigh she wasn’t quite mobile and independent yet!) and the most important thing I have learned about photographing ALL little ones is pretty simple: Go with the flow! And amid laughter, tears, snacks, and mom and dad’s entertainment… that is exactly what we did!
A couple weeks ago I sat in front of the camera for the first time in a long while. It’s good for a photographer to do that every now and then. You can kind of forget how it can feels if you don’t do it often. (Am I smiling enough? Too much? Can they see my lazy eye? Is my hair laying weird?) We all over-think at times, and often just take ourselves too seriously. That’s why I encourage families to just interact with one another, and try to forget about the fact we are taking pictures. I’ll give a few prompts, some suggestions about what I’m hoping to capture, but really the images come to life when you just loosen up and just be you. Those candid moments of interaction are the authentic you… the true chemistry of your family. Sometimes we are funny, or even goofy. Sometimes we are serious and reflective. And sometimes you might even see us cry.
Through the laughter and the tears, I always enjoy photographing this family. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you! These moments in time pass oh, so fast. Savor every moment. Before you know it, she will be grown, and the time will come to truly let go and give her wings to fly.
